The towns of
Ballybofey and Stranorlar are linked by an arched bridge over the
River Finn. While this part of Donegal is not noted for tourism,
there is excellent fishing, cycling and hiking available. In
Ballybofey's Protestant church is the grave of Isaac Butt (1813 -
1879), founder of the Irish Home Rule movement. The River Finn is a
good salmon river and fishing gear is available from McElhinney's.
There is good hiking and hill-walking on the Blue Stack Mountains
and along the Ulster Way - bring maps and provisions. Ballybofey is
rich in drama and culture. Many actors of renown began their careers
in the Balor Theatre. Local dancers have gone on to perform in "Riverdance"
and "Lord of the Dance". As well as the annual "Twin Towns
Festival", which takes place each year in August. Browsing around
Ballybofey's Main Street, the modern day visitor might be surprised
to learn just how many of these bright, colourful shops and public
houses have been trading here for generations, passed down from
father to son...and mostly managing to keep their traditional
welcoming atmosphere. |
