find holiday homes in Donegal Town

Donegal Town is at
the centre of South Donegal, and as the ancient seat of the
O’Donnells and their main castle, it gave its name to the county. As
well as the O’Donnells, Donegal is also intimately connected with
the Four Masters whose ‘Annals’ were originated in the Franciscan
Friary in the town. A short distance to the north one finds Lough
Eske in a beautiful setting, its tree fringed shores lying in a
horseshoe of mountains. Close by are the Blue Stacks (Cruacha),
source of much folklore. Further on again one comes to Barnesmore, a
three-mile long pass through steeply rising mountains. The modern
road does not lessen the wilderness of the surroundings. Donegal
Town continues to be the main centre of the south of the county. The
road to Ballyshannon, Sligo and the south meets the road heading to
Letterkenny, Lifford and Derry, as well as that leading to Ireland’s
premier fishing port at Killybegs in the attractive and bustling
Diamond, the three-sided square in the heart of the town. The town
was also a hub in the era of rail travel, when three County Donegal
Railway lines met there - from Ballyshannon, from Killybegs, and
from Stranorlar, from which there were connections to Glenties,
Strabane, Letterkenny, and Derry.
