find holiday homes in Fanad
|
Walkers will discover
in the Fanad peninsula area a vast network of bog roads and mountain
tracks to explore. There are 12 scenic walks ranging in distance
from 4 km to16 km. The views along some of the routes are
breathtaking with a variety of rock formations along the way. The
area contains deserted seashores, sandy beaches and rugged inland
hills and glens. The recently constructed Mulroy Bridge over Mulroy
Bay gives access to all the amenities on the Rosguill Peninsula.
Ballymacstocker Bay, a wonderful blue flag beach, stretches
southwards from the holiday village of Portsalon. This beach was
voted 2nd best beach in the world by Sunday Observer in 2002.
Ballyheirnan on the Atlantic ocean to the north of Fanad, is a
surfers paradise with endless powerful waves. Fanad Lighthouse was
built by George Halpin and today serves as a helicopter base for the
service and maintenance of all lighthouses along the northern coast.
Along the Lough Swilly coastline there are impressive
fortifications, built during Napoleonic times - indeed, one of
these, on the shore front in Rathmullan, now houses the "Flight of
the Earls" heritage centre while the other 2 are privately owned.
Golf courses on the Fanad Peninsula include the 9 hole Otway course
and the fabulous links course at Portsalon. |
