Kerrykeel is a small
village in County Donegal, Ireland. It lies between Knockalla
Mountain, Ranny hill and the scenic Mulroy Bay. The village is also
in close vicinity to the popular tourist area of Portsalon, and
serves as the gateway to the Fanad peninsula. Just before Kerrykeel
(also spelled Carrowkeel) is a prehistoric chamber tomb with a
massive capstone between 6 and 10ft/2 and 4m in size. To the north
of Kerrykeel a new bridge over the Mulroy gives easy access to the
Rosgoill Peninsula and Rosapenna Golf Links. A short drive to the
east brings you to Portsalon which has a fine links course and a
wonderful stretch of Blue Flag sandy beach. Surfing has become
popular in the area particularly at Ballyheirnan Bay along the north
Fanad coast. Scallops are a speciality of the Mulroy bay area and
these can be enjoyed, fresh from the sea, at Ripples Restaurant run
by Dessie McGettigan and his wife
