Loughanure village is
situated on the N56, five miles east of Dungloe and five miles west
of Gweedore, and is part of the Parish of Annagry. It has a
population of 400. It is a Gaeltacht (Irish speaking area) and has
an Irish College, Coláiste Mhuire, founded in 1945, which caters for
almost a thousand students each year in Irish language classes at
Easter, June, July and August. There is a Lounge/Bar and Restaurant,
Casadh an tSúgáin, at the crossroads. There is a supermarket, petrol
station and restaurant opposite the ‘Tech’. The Lake from where the
village got its name, (The Lake of the Yew Tree or Loch an Iúir as
Gaeilge) attracts many visitors each year to fish for brown trout,
sea trout and salmon. Boats are available for hire from the local
angling club. |
