Ramelton,
(Rathmelton) on the shores of Lough Swilly, is an elegant Georgian
town in a county that is better known for its natural attractions.
The village was settled by English and Scots planters during the
Ulster Plantation of the 17th century and is the site of the oldest
Presbyterian church in Ireland. The 1995 television program "The
Hanging Gale", which told of the Potato Famine of the 19th century
was filmed along the town's quays. Ramelton is home to the Donegal
Ancestry Centre which is the official family history
research/Genealogy Centre for County Donegal and provides a
comprehensive research service for people seeking their Donegal
Ancestors. The Centre is affiliated to the Irish Family History
Foundation and the Irish Genealogy Project. The heritage exhibition
entitled 'The Ramelton Story,' is housed in the building next to the
Genealogy Centre and covers many topics concerning Ramelton's past
and present. Many of the buildings in Ramelton date from its heyday
as a port during the prosperous years of the 18th and early 19th
centuries and there is much for the architectural enthusiast to view
in the town. Ramelton has many shops, restaurants and bars with live
music. Examples of the first-rate eating out places are the Bridge
Bar seafood restaurant with good music at the weekend and the nearby
Mirabeau Steakhouse. |
