he village of
Ardglass is situated about 11 kilometres to the south east of
Downpatrick, on the Lecale peninsula. Ardglass has been a fishing
port for more than 2000 years. The port specialises in herrings,
prawns, and whitefish.
In the village itself you can see a total of seven castles including
Isabella’s Tower, a folly built on top of a hill by Aubrey de Vere
Beauclerc. He built the tower in the 19th century as a gazebo for
his invalid daughter.
There are many sporting and social attractions in Ardglass. The
local golf club is very popular and has its club house in Ardglass
Castle. There is also sailing and a variety of watersports,
including an important base for deep sea angling.
The tidal North Dock was built by William Ogilvie in the early 19th
century. The lighthouse here is a replacement for the original which
was blown down in 1838.
In the summer months it’s possible to visit Jordan’s Castle. Lawyer
and antiquarian Francis Joseph Biggar bought the castle in 1911 to
secure its future. It was bequeathed to the nation when he died and
is now maintained by the DoE’s Historic Monuments Division.
Between Ardglass and Killough is a headland called Coney Island
which has been immortalised by Van Morrison in his song of the same
name. |
