Set in the heart of
Drumlin Country Ballynahinch is a thriving market town which was
laid out in the first half of the 17th century by the Rawdon family
who also built a fine mansion for themselves, Montalto House. In the
following century another family, the Kers, became the landlords of
Ballynahinch and it was they who created the town's pleasant
terraces and the large shops with their fine façades.
Ballynahinch along with Newcastle and Downpatrick, is one of the
three largest towns of the Down District. The town lies on the main
A24 Belfast to Newcastle road 15 miles south of Belfast.The town’s
market house was built in 1795 and is currently used by the
community. Ballynahinch also has a small leisure centre
Two miles south of Ballynahinch, on the south slopes of Cratlieve
Mountain, rises the striking man-made formation known as the
Legananny Dolmen. Silhouetted against the skyline and surrounded by
a desolate landscape, it has a brooding, mystical presence.
Loughinisland Churches are a group of three ruined churches in a
graveyard on an island in Loughinisland Lake and can be reached by a
causeway. The churches range in date from the 13th century to the
17th century.
Spa Golf Club is an 18 hole parkland course, a mile south of
