Bangor is a large
seaside resort situated on the southern side of Belfast Lough.
Bangor's attractive Victorian and Edwardian architecture reflects
its popularity as a seaside resort during those eras. The town still
attracts many day visitors from Belfast and is well provided with
all the usual amusements as well as offering some splendid Victorian
parks. One of these, Ward Park, has two large ponds supporting a
range of wildfowl and a resident flock of barnacle geese. Bangor
also boasts a weekly open air market, plenty of pubs and eating
places, and some good beaches, the best of which is Ballyholme Bay.
It was the laying of the railway from Belfast in 1865 which provided
the real momentum for Bangor to begin its climb to eminence as a
seaside resort. By 1885 Bangor was being billed as the ‘Northern
Brighton’. In the period from this decade until the First World War
all the architectural character of the town that we know was formed.
Bangor Castle, now the Town Hall, is actually a Victorian mansion
built in 1852. Its former outbuildings house the North Down Heritage
Centre (free) which has some striking displays highlighting the
archaeology, early-Christian history and natural history of the
area. These are enhanced by audio-visual presentations and sound
effects tapes. Prize exhibits here include the Ballycroghan Swords,
dating from 500 BC and a 9th century handbell found near Bangor.
Uniquely for a local museum, there's also a Jordan Room which
displays a remarkable collection of Far Eastern wares amassed by a
locally-born diplomat, Sir John Jordan.
Pickie Fun Park is one of Northern Irelands more popular tourist
attractions especially for those with families. There are many
activities to be found here. Playground for the younger ones, swans
on the lake, paddling pools, a mini-railway and go-carts for the
more daring.
Bangor Marina is Northern Ireland's biggest and most prestigious
marina. It is the setting for a variety of major sailing and tourist
events each year. The marina and harbour is managed by Quay Marinas
Limited on behalf of North Down Borough Council and holds the Five
Gold Anchor and Blue Flag Awards and the RYA Customer Award. |
