Castlewellan is a
market town in County Down, situated beside Castlewellan Lake and
Slievenaslat mountain, 25km south west of Downpatrick. Designed
around the 18th century Castlewellan has a wide main street which
runs through two main squares lined with chestnut trees. The town
was designed by a French architect for the Annesley Family , then
owners of what is now Castlewellan Christian Conference Centre and
Forest Park, and is unique within Ireland due to its tree lined
squares both in the old town (upper square) and new town (lower
square) as well as its very wide main street. The old market house
in the upper square was built in 1764 and now houses the public
library.
Castlewellan Forest Park and Castlewellan Lake are situated to the
northwest of the village. The park is located in a dramatic setting
of mountains and sea and has one of the most outstanding tree and
shrub collections in Europe. Each year, in July, Castlewellan
Agricultural Show is held within the beautiful grounds of
Castlewellan Forest Park.
Castlewellan Lake is a very popular fishery. It is stocked regularly
with over 10,000 brown and rainbow trout. Water quality is good and
lures are effective. The lake is one of the main attractions of
Castlewellan Forest Park. Other facilities include a car-park,
cafeteria, caravan, camping and barbecue facilities. There are also
scenic walks of varying lengths.
Legananny Dolmen is an ancient burial site located on the southern
fringe of the Slieve Croob mountain range. The structure consists of
two portal stones to the south, one 5ft 9ins high, the other 6ft and
a further single support at the north end, 4ft high. The long
capstone, almost 2ft in diameter gives the structure its distinctive
tripod appearance. |
