The village of Comber
lies five miles south of Newtownards, at the northern end of
Strangford Lough. Set beside the River Enver, noted for its sea
trout, Comber is another plantation town that owes its development
to the Industrial Revolution. Flour-milling and distilling developed
in the 19th century but the town’s oldest industry is the spinning
mill dating back to 1863 and regarded as one of the best examples of
its kind in Northern Ireland
Comber is world renowned for being the birthplace of the designer of
the Titanic, Thomas Andrews. Andrews, was managing director of the
Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast and famously died in the
sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
The town is also famed for its fine quality, early season potatoes,
known locally as Comber spuds and the village once boasted a
distillery producing Comber whiskey. Today, Comber’s main interest
lies in its variety of antique, decor and craft shops, including the
Doghouse Gallery
To the south of the town, Castle Espie Wildfowl and Wetland Centre
has a resident population of ducks, geese and swans, and some 7000
visiting birds over the course of a year. The centre is run by the
Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust which provides hides and you can also
view the birds from the coffee shop and art gallery
Comber has a relatively dry climate with a high sunshine average,
making it ideal for arable farming, giving the area the reputation
of being 'The Garden of Ulster’. |
