Dundrum is an
attractive village located on the main Belfast to Newcastle Road and
is situated on the western shore of Dundrum Inner Bay, a shallow
sandy tidal area connected to the open sea by a narrow channel. The
summits of Slieve Croob and the Mourne Mountains provide the
backdrop to the village to the north west and south west. Dominating
the village however, is the impressive Dundrum Castle. Set high on a
hill this Anglo-Norman Castle features a circular keep and massive
walls.
The main street in Dundrum, dating from the 19th century, has been
radically rebuilt with its substantial two storey terraces. In
addition there are a significant number of listed buildings
dispersed throughout the village which, combined with the number of
mature trees along the Main Street, gives the village its individual
character.
Today Dundrum functions as a small service centre for the
surrounding rural hinterland. It also caters for passing tourists
and day trippers.
Coal was a major import into Dundrum, where the East Downshire
Steamship Company was based. The village ceased to be a commercial
port in 1984.
Murlough National Nature Reserve, a mile south of the town,
preserves a sand dune system with heath and woodland surrounded by
estuary and sea, rich in botany and wildlife. Guided walks are
available or you can follow the way-marked nature trail with an
information guide.
