Greyabbey in County
Down is a small village situated on the western shores of Strangford
Lough, on the Ards Peninsula between Kircubbin and Newtownards.
Greyabbey can be reached by a short and scenic drive, north from
Belfast or south from Downpatrick via the short ferry crossing from
Strangford to Portaferry.
Greyabbey gains its name from the Cistercian Abbey, located on the
northern edge of the village nestling in the beautiful parkland of
Rosemount stately home. Rosemount House is the home of the
Montgomery family. The Cistercian Abbey was founded in 1193 by
Affreca daughter of Godred the King of the Isle of Man and wife of
John De Courcy, a knight from Somerset, the Anglo-Norman conqueror
of Ulster. The tradition is that Affreca founded the Abbey in
thanksgiving for a safe landing after a storm at sea in which the
vessel and all souls aboard would perish.
Today Greyabbey, in keeping with its ancient past, is often
associated with the antiques trade, there being several specialist
antiques shops in the town, as well as some interesting Georgian and
Victorian buildings, and a traditional coaching inn. There are also
some lovely walks overlooking the magnificent Strangford Lough.
