Kilkeel is a small
town in County Down, known as the capital of the Kingdom of Mourne.
The town is situated by the sea and is surrounded by the Mountains
of Mourne. It is about four miles away from the important Silent
Valley Reservoir, which supplies most of the water to Northern
Ireland. It is the main fishing port on the Down coast, and its
harbour houses one of the largest fishing fleets in Ireland. In the
summer Kilkeel hosts a Harbour Festival and the Nautilus Centre has
an exhibition on the fishing industry, a fish shop, gift shop, café
and conference centre.
Kilkeel is a favorite haunt of anglers, with good catches to be had
not only from the sea and the River Kilkeel but also nearby
Carlingford Lough. Around Kilkeel are a number of prehistoric
chambered tombs.
Cranfield beach is A Blue Flag Beach located 4 miles from Kilkeel.
The beach is set in an beautiful location at the mouth of
Carlingford Lough with the majestic Mourne Mountains as a backdrop.
The long, south facing beach offers excellent facilities for all
visitors whether it be for a gentle stroll or for water based
activities.
Kilkeel Golf Club is a most attractive parkland course enclosed by
the walls of the Kilmorey Estate at the foot of the Mourne
Mountains. Expanded to 18 holes in 1993, the new layout provides a
true test to players of all categories. Set in mature woodland and
masses of rhododendron shrubs, Kilkeel has become one of the best
inland stretches in Ireland and proudly hosted the 1999 British
Amateur Championship, along with Royal County Down. |
