Located at the
southwest corner of Strangford Lough, Killyleagh is a plantation
town and port laid out in a gridiron pattern. Killyleagh was
designated a Maritime Port in 1620 and a stout harbour was built,
leading to the expansion of the fishing industry. A cotton mill was
built at the end of the 18th century and soon, at Shrigley, Martin’s
great flax spinning mill was erected which became one of the largest
in Ireland
Today the waterfront is still the focal point of the town with an
increasing emphasis on tourism and sailing.
The town is dominated by Killyleagh Castle, a Loire-style chateau
which claims to be the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland. The
Castle has been the home of the Hamilton family since the 17th
century Plantation of Ulster and the turrets can be hired for a self
catering holiday experience. The castle hosts occasional concerts.
In the past performers have included Van Morrison, Glen Hansard and
Brian Kennedy.
Delamont Country Park is located outside Killyleagh on the road to
Downpatrick on the stunning Strangford Lough. Delamont offers the
visitor the chance to 'get away from it all' in tranquil, rural
surroundings. The country park is home of the longest miniature
railway in Ireland and the Strangford Stone - the tallest megalith
in Ireland. The park also offers Waymarked walks, boat trips,
woodland, open pasture, refreshments, outdoor adventure playground
and events. |
