Rathfriland is a
rural hilltop market town, situated between the Mourne Mountains,
Slieve Croob and Banbridge. A prominent water tower sits at the top
of the hill and is visible from the various scenic approach roads
that lead to the town.
Alderman Hawkins founded Rathfriland as a Plantation town in the
17th century. Charles II gave Hawkins the land for his services in
the Parliamentary Wars.
The town square is located on top of the hill, and a market house
(erected around 1764), which dominates the main square, was built
for the linen market by Theodosia Hawkins-Magill. A clock-faced war
memorial stands in the square on the south eastern side.
Rathfriland is most famous for the Bronte centre which tells of the
history of the Bronte family and also hosts regular musicians from
near and far. The town is beside the Mourne Mountains, providing an
ideal base for outdoor activities and sightseeing. |
