Named by the Vikings
’the strong fjord’, Strangford village lies opposite Portaferry on
the Narrows at the mouth of Strangford Lough. This picturesque
village nestles in a natural harbour on the coast line and is the
main base for the Strangford Lough Ferry service. The village
retains the atmosphere of an Irish fishing village from the last
century with a small harbour, overlooked by rows of 19th century
cottages and a fine Georgian terrace. Strangford Castle, a 16th
century tower-house with drop hole at roof level to defend the door,
is located near the harbour.
Three miles west of the village, the National Trust run Castle Ward,
a 700 acre estate, that looks proudly over Strangford Lough. Open to
the public, the ’castle’ is actually a fortified house, built in
1760 with facades in both classical and gothic styles.
For three weeks during June, Castle Ward becomes the Irish
Glyndebourne, with opera performances and elaborate picnics in the
grounds. |
