Situated on the
shores of Carlingford Lough, the gateway to the Mourne Mountains,
Warrenpoint is an attractive seaside resort with neat Victorian
terraces and wide streets. There are great views of the Cooley
Mountains from the town's promenade and shingle beach
The port of Warrenpoint was first constructed in the late 1770s. Its
scenic beauty and coastal location instigated rapid development, and
by 1836 there was a school, a courthouse, a savings bank and a
Farming Society in the town. When Newry port closed in the 1970s,
Warrenpoint’s port was enlarged and became the main port for goods
coming into Newry.
Old Narrow Water Castle just outside the town is a three-storey
tower house built in 1560 to protect the entrance to the Newry river
estuary. Across the road is the New Narrow Water Castle built in
1840.
Warrenpoint Golf Club is a very attractive parkland course
overlooking Carlingford Lough. The course has accommodated several
worthy professional events including the Irish Professional
Championship and more recently a Ladies European Tour event.
The town also has facilities for yachting, fishing and swimming, and
hosts the annual Maiden Of Mournes Festival and the Blues on the Bay
Festival. A small passenger ferry service operates out of
Warrenpoint to the village of Omeath in the Irish Republic. The trip
takes about fifteen minutes. Other cruises include trips to Narrow
Water Castle and Bay & Harbour Cruises. |
