Blaney lies in the
west of County Fermanagh, on the southern shores of Lower Lough Erne
9 miles West of Enniskillen. Lying close to Derrygonnelly, Blaney is
not a heavily populated area but enjoys some beautiful scenery. Here
there are gentle hills, trees, rock strewn slopes and water all
acting in concert to make the area very attractive to visitors
Just outside of Blaney is Tully Castle. This castle was founded by
Sir John Hume in 1619 and when it was sacked in the Rising of 1641
by Rory Maguire, the family seat was replaced nearby with Castle
Hume Hall designed by Richard Cassels. The Castle Hume Golf Club is
situated within the grounds of the old Ely estate on the edges of
Castle Hume. This championship course has a reputation for being one
of the most testing golf courses in Ireland. The course is famed for
its curvaceous greens, rolling fairways and challenging water
hazards. Castle Hume boasts some seven thousand trees and over
thirty bunkers. Manicured to the highest standards, it is a model of
golfing elegance
Also close to Blaney can be found Monea Castle. The Castle is
dramatically ruined and set above a valley, with a fantastic view
all around. Built in 1618 by Malcolm Hamilton, the Rector of
Devenish, the Castle had a chequered history until the Hamilton's
were elevated to the peerage and moved on to grander surroundings
Until 1987, Ely Lodge, named after Lord Ely, was a summer retreat
for the Duke and Duchess of Westminster and their children. It is
now a private residence. A flying boat base was built by the
Americans at Ely Lodge in 1941 and American troops were based there
from 1942 to 1944. |
