The parish of
Killesher, which includes the small village of Florencecourt, is an
area boasting remarkable landscapes which can be considered not only
scenically beautiful, but also historically significant. The area
contains the only true mountain in Fermanagh - Cuilcagh- at a height
of 665m, together with two of Fermanagh's major tourist attractions,
Marble Arch Caves and the National Trust property, Florence Court
House.
Florence Court House is a fascinating example of mid-18th century
Irish Palladian architecture. The present house, the former home of
the Earls of Enniskillen, was started by John Cole and completed
around 1775. It was named after Florence, his wife. The house is
surrounded by a large area of parkland, garden and woodland
including the recently restored walled garden where the pink and
white roses are especially attractive in early summer.
The renowned Marble Arch Caves and Visitor Centre are also located
near Florencecourt village. Set in the limestone foothills of
Cuilcagh Mountain, visitors can take guided tours through the Marble
Arch Caves and Geopark. Sharing a border with Cavan, in the Republic
of Ireland, this is the first International Geopark of its kind.
Tourists can partake in a seventy-five minute long tour of the show
caves in Marble Arch during which they travel through the first part
of the caves in a specially designed boat floating on the
subterranean Cladagh River, before walking through the rest of the
chambers. |
