Lisnaskea is the
second largest town in County Fermanagh after Enniskillen. The town
is built around the long main street, which bends at almost 90
degrees along its course.
Lisnaskea has a very proud heritage dating back to the ruling
Maguire Clan of Fermanagh. The first Maguire king, Donn Carragh
Maguire 1260 - 1302, and subsequent kings, were crowned at Sciath
Gabhra, the Moate Ring Fort just a mile from the centre of the town.
Lisnaskea also has a strong Plantation history. Lord Balfour of
Clanawley took control of the town at the time of the Plantation,
building Castle Balfour and the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland. The
ruins of Castle Balfour are located just off main - it is currently
undergoing a restoration programme.
Lisnaskea was to change hands many times over the years until 1821
when it came under the aegis of the Earls of Erne who built the Town
Hall which also incorporated the Market House, the Courthouse, a
cookery school and a place of entertainment (now the Northern Bank).
The Butter Market constructed in 1856 stands next to the Ulster
Bank, a fine stuccoed classical building erected in 1873.
Today Lisnaskea continues to be a busy trading and banking centre
with several well established hardware and grocery stores. |
