Tempo lies some 6
miles to the north east of Enniskillen in a beautiful setting at the
foot of Brougher Mountain. It used to be called Milltown, perhaps
because a busy corn mill was established nearby in 1750, but it
eventually took the name of the nearby river Tempo.
The long main street accommodates the churches of the four main
Christian denominations. Driving into the village from the south,
one is greeted initially by the Stone Circle at the entrance to the
village. This is actually a modern construction designed by the
residents of the village to both highlight the Celtic heritage of
the area and make Tempo more distinctive.
On the other side of the Tempo River from the Main Street lies Tempo
Manor, once a country home for Fermanagh`s oldest ruling family, the
Maguires. The present Victorian manor, which was built in 1863 by
the family of the present occupants, boasts 300 acres of grounds and
woodlands.
