Aughrim is a
historical and attractive village in County Galway. It is located
between the towns of Loughrea and Ballinasloe along the N6 national
primary road that connects Galway and Dublin.
Its place in history is assured as it was here that the Marquis de
St Ruth prepared the Irish troops for the Battle of Aughrim during
the Williamite war in Ireland. The battle was fought on 12 July
1691. The battle of Aughrim Interpretative Centre is situated in the
village and tells the story of this deadly battle
With its historical heritage, it is a neatly maintained modern
village blending the old and the new. There is much for a walker to
appreciate. The landscape around Aughrim is mainly low lying hills
which are said to look like horses backs from which the Irish name
Each Dhroim comes from.
