Ballynahinch or
Ballinahinch is situated close to Recess in County Galway in the
West of Ireland, on the road from Recess to Roundstone. It also lies
on the route of the former railway line from Galway city to Clifden
(the "Capital of Connemara"). The name comes from the Irish Baile na
hInse meaning settlement of the island.
Ballynahinch Castle, built in the 18th century for the Martyn
family, one of whose better known members was 'Humanity Dick'
founder of the RSPCA, has been used as a hotel since 1946. The
Castle was originally built in the 1750s and is today well known as
a high-end hotel with a focus on fly fishing for salmon.
With its castle, mountains, lakes and river, Ballynahinch is
undoubtedly one of the best-known areas of Connemara. The area is
well served by fine hotels and restaurants as well as some of the
best beaches in Ireland. The superb Connemara Golf Course at
Ballyconneely is only a short drive away, with Roundstone only six
miles away and Clifden about seven miles to the west. |
