Carraroe is a
traditional Irish village situated in the South of Connemara on the
coast of Galway Bay a short 30 minutes drive from Galway city. The
village is located between Casla Bay and Greatman's Bay. A whole
series of islands composed of Lettermore, Gorumna and Lettermullen
are joined by a causeway to the mainland near Carraroe. There is an
old world atmosphere to be found here, with endless winding boreens
and high granite walls leading to now silent turf quays and deserted
beaches.
Carraroe is one of the most important areas for promoting Irish
culture including song, dance and Irish Summer schools. During the
summer months music can be heard flowing freely from the many
traditional Irish pubs as locals meet with tourists & students, here
to learn the language or just experience a unique piece of culture.
Carraroe is also the centre for the Irish language media: the main
national Irish-language newspaper "Foinse" has its head office in
the village, the Irish language radio station, Raidio na Gaeltachta,
is located in nearby Casla (3 miles) and the Irish language TV
station, TG4 is based in Baile na hAbhann, Tully (7 miles).
Some of Irelands most beautiful unspoiled beaches can be found in
Carraroe. Most famous would be 'Trá an Dóilín' the Coral Strand, a
very unique beach with it's fine coral. The fishing port of
Rossaveal is just five miles away. Rossaveal also houses the
terminal for ferries to the Aran Islands.
Féile an Dóilín is the west of Ireland's premier maritime festival,
taking place annually in Carraroe on the shores of Galway Bay.
Celebrating this unique region's rich maritime history, the festival
has something to offer to everyone, young and old. The festival
revolves around the ancient and beautiful Galway Hooker boat. |
