Claregalway is built
on the river Clare, 11km from Galway city. It is located at the
junction of the N17 (Galway/Sligo) and N18 (Dublin/Limerick) routes
and is only 3km from Galway International Airport.
Given its location, Claregalway has taken advantage of its prime
site for development, growing from a quite agricultural village to a
dynamic, vibrant location and one of the fastest growing towns in
Ireland. Although Claregalway town has expanded substantially over
the years, it still holds great respect and admiration for its
culture & history, as is evidenced by the many historical sites
located around the town.
One of the main features of the village is the arched bridge, known
locally as the Nine Arches, erected in the early 1700s, through
which water no longer flows. Claregalway Castle (privately owned) is
a well preserved five storey tower constructed in the 1400s.
Claregalway is also home to the ruins of a Franciscan Abbey built by
John de Cogan in 1290. It was one of the most beautiful of its kind
in the country
Claregalway lies within the Gaeltacht and traditionally most of the
locals would have only spoken English as a second language. An
influx of new residents over the last thirty years has meant that
most residents now rarely speak Irish. |
