The picturesque
Village of Clarinbridge is located south of Oranmore, on the Galway
to Gort Road, close to the head of Dunbulcaun Bay, the most easterly
inlet of Galway Bay. The name Clarinbridge derives from the bridge
across the Clarin River. Beside the Clarinbridge River there is an
earthwork which is reputed to have been a medieval fortification. On
the east coast close to the Ballynamanagh bridge, is Dunbulcaun, a
ringfort with a motte-type, central mound.
Located in the centre of the village, is Paddy Burkes a delightful
thatched pub and restaurant established in 1850 and the home of the
renowned Clarinbridge Oyster Festival The Oyster Festival has taken
place every September since 1954, with guests from all over the
world returning annually to celebrate the new oyster season. The
shellfish at the centre of the festivities are fresh from the famed
local oyster beds and are rated as the best anywhere in the world.
As well as eating oysters there is plenty for visitors to enjoy,
with entertainment, music and dancing especially, as well as a very
dressy gala ball, where those attending are entertained by top Irish
musical acts.
Located 15 minutes south of Galway City Clarinbridge is an ideal
base for exploring Galway and the Burren region. |
