The Gaeltacht village
of Clonbur is located on the border between Galway/Mayo in an area
known as Joyce Country. The village nestles between two world
renowned fishing lakes - Lough Corrib and Lough Mask - making it an
ideal base for the trout angler.
Mount Gable lies just 2 km to the west of Clonbur. It is an easy
climb of about one hour's duration. The effort is worthwhile because
the views of Lough Corrib, stretching away to the south, Lough Mask
to the north and the Connemara mountains to the west, are simply
breathtaking.
The ruins of the Petersburg Estate that now houses an adventure
centre was once the seat of the Lynch family, one of the tribes of
Galway. John Lynch a member of the family, was a signatory to the
American Declaration of Independence.
Clonbur is close to the village of Cong and Ashford Castle. It is
also a short distance from the heritage town of Westport. |
