Eyrecourt is a
beautiful village in County Galway located 5km from the river
Shannon, 8 km from Banagher and 15 km from Portumna
John Eyre, a Cromwellian soldier, who was granted large tracts of
land in East Galway, founded the village. He built a castle on the
site of a former O'Madden Castle. The present day village of
Eyrecourt has all the appearance of a planned town, with its wide
main street, a large market-square and elegant mall at the entrance
to the Castle. The village has two fine nineteenth century churches,
one Catholic and the other Church of Ireland.
Eyrecourtstands midway along the Beara Breifne Greenway an historic
Waymarked Way for walking. Each year in June it hosts a large
festival of early machinery, the Eyrecourt Vintage Festival, when
ancient tractors, steam-engines and a variety of early farm machines
have a chance to run again.
Angling is extremely popular in the Eyrecourt area , with superb
coarse fishing available locally , Eyrecourt is also an ideal base
for touring with Birr Castle , Clonmacnoise, Clonfert Cathedral and
Portumna Forrest situated in the locality. Galway is just one hours
drive away and the beautiful Clare coast with its clean beaches and
wild scenery is also just a short drive away. |
