Headford, located 28
km north of Galway City, is the popular angling centre for the
eastern shores of Lough Corrib, and Greenfields, some 6.5 km west of
the town, is its boating harbour. The town is situated next to the
Black River (noted also for its trout angling) which is the county
boundary with Mayo. Headford is also the centre of a region rich in
archaeological monuments, ranging from prehistoric burial cairns,
Iron Age stone enclosures, early Norman and later castles, to a
bewildering array of monastic sites.
Some of the historical attractions in Headford include the well
preserved monastic ruins of the Ross Errilly Franciscan Friary on
the banks of the Black River built around 1349 and the early
Georgian Lisdonagh House overlooking Lough Hacket
Nestled adjacent to Lough Corrib, Headford is a location that has
blossomed over the last decade while still retaining its original
village atmosphere. Today, the modern cattle mart, although
replacing the fairs and markets once held in the town's two squares,
ensures the local popularity of this North Galway town. Headford is
twinned with the picturesque town of Le Faouët in Brittany, France.
Headford is an ideal base for touring the delights of Galway City
and Connemara. Headford offers a variety of pubs & dining
experiences from cafes to bar food and gourmet restaurants. Live
music sessions are held most weekends. Locally there is an abundance
of walking trails, hill climbing, fishing on Lough Corrib and Lough
Mask, boat trips on Lough Corrib, horse riding & falconry both at
Ashford Castle, golf, cycling & caving. |
