Letterfrack is a
small village in the heart of Connemara founded by the Quakers in
the mid-19th century. It is located 15 km north-east of Clifden. It
is surrounded on one side by the 12 Bens and Connemara National
Park. On the other side it is bounded by Ballinakill Bay and the
Renvyle Peninsula. The village is dominated by the Diamond Hill
which is located in the Connemara National Park.
There is plenty to do and see in Letterfrack. The visitors centre
for Connemara National Park is located in the village and is the
starting point for some lovely walks including a track all the way
to the top of the Diamond Hill suitable for even the most
inexperienced hill walker. A furniture exhibition is held each
summer at the Furniture College in the village. Boat trips from the
pier enable the visitor to fish or just watch the dolphins.
Letterfrack was also the location of Marconi's transatlantic
wireless receiving station associated with his high power
transmitter in Clifden.
The village is renowned for its live traditional Irish music. Well
known environmentalist and music lover Leo Hallisey organises two
weeks a year - Bog Week and Sea Week - when musicians and music
lovers congregate for music as well as hill-walking and a programme
of talks and discussions on environmental matters.
Set in the Connemara mountains near Letterfrack is Kylemore Abbey, a
beautiful neo-Gothic Castle. Built by the English industrialist
Mitchell Henry in 1868, visitors to the three reception rooms in the
Abbey are touched by its history steeped in romance and tragedy.
Kylemore's six acre Victorian walled garden is one of Ireland's
finest gardens.
