Mountbellew is a
small market town 45km from Galway City on the N63 to Roscommon. It
is situated by the banks of the River Shiven, which provides some
excellent fly fishing for brown trout. A market is held in the town
square every Tuesday and a beautiful recent addition to that square
is a very fine equestrian statue of Bobbyjo, the famous racehorse
who won the Irish and English grand nationals. There are some
interesting natural amenities in the Mountbellew area, such as
Coillte forest walks, Castlegar River and river park and man made
lake with a bird sanctuary
Mountbellew was once the home of the Grattan-Bellew family, famous
Galway parliamentarians during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their
demesne is now a beautiful wooded area of forest walks and picnic
areas, filled with interesting historical items. The village bridge
also contains a rare milestone inserted in the middle of its
parapet.
The town also has a fine 18-hole golf course, set amongst some
beautifully wooded scenery. Founded in 1929, Mountbellew is a mature
tree lined parkland course, with generous fairways and greens that
are always in good condition. It measures 5,214 metres with a par of
69 and a standard scratch of 66. |
