The town of Oranmore
has the best of both worlds, rural and suburban, historic and
modern! It is situated 10 minutes drive from Galway city, at the
crossroads to all major driving routes; Galway, Sligo, Dublin,
Shannon, Limerick and Killarney. Oranmore is effectively the gateway
to Ireland's South West. It is a perfect base from which to visit
the Burren, Connemara, the Aran Islands, Galway City, and the Lough
Corrib and Lough Mask water systems. An extra advantage is that
Galway regional airport is located in neighbouring Carnmore.
Oranmore, like the other towns and villages close to Galway, is fast
becoming a dormitory town for the city. Situated on the eastern side
of Galway Bay, it lies under the shadow of a restored Clanricarde
Burke castle, which saw action in the Civil and Cromwellian wars of
the 17th century. Opposite it, beside the Galway road, lies a
megalithic, or large stone tomb, of a type classed as a boulder
dolmen, dating perhaps, to 2,000 B.C. A more recent monument, a
statue of a freedom fighter, stands at the main corner in the town.
Rinville Park just outside the town is a large public park located
by the sea. The facilities include a, playground, picnic and
barbecue areas. The network of walks through the woodland and open
farmland, along with the scenic view of Galway Bay make it a very
popular amenity area. Set in the grounds of an old stately house,
many of the original structures are still in place. The Galway Bay
Sailing Club is located in Rinville,
The Galway Bay Golf & Country Club is also located in Renville near
Oranmore. Christy O'Connor Jnr, Ryder & World cup player, designed
this 18 hole course to highlight and preserve the ancient historic
features of the Renville peninsula. The spectacular setting on
Galway Bay is distractingly beautiful and cleverly designed mix of
holes present a real golfing challenge which demands total
concentration. Athenry Golf Club is also a short driving distance
from Oranmore. |
