Nestling between the
ruggedly beautiful mountains of Connemara and lovely Lough Corrib is
the delightful village of Oughterard - the "Gateway to Connemara".
The vilage is situated on the banks of the Owenriff River close to
the western shores of Lough Corrib 26km northwest of Galway City
Oughterard is the perfect base for anglers, walkers golfers,
cyclists and sightseers alike. Lough Corrib, the second largest lake
in Ireland, is sprinkled with hundreds of small islands ripe for
exploring. The lough holds brown trout, salmon, pike and perch. A
fisherman's paradise.
Oughterard is a splendid centre for touring and viewing the grandeur
of the west of Ireland at any time of the year. The 15th century
Aughnanure Castle and Glengowla mineral mines are just two the many
fascinating places you can visit within a short distance of the
village. Other tourist attractions include viewing The Hill of Doon,
playing a round of golf in Oughterard’s scenic 18-hole golf course
or enjoying a cruise on Lough Corrib to Cong or to Inchagoill
Island, or perhaps finding out how candles are made by visiting the
workshop and showroom of the Connemara Candle Maker.
The Quiet Man Bridge is located 5 miles passed Oughterard, down the
Sky Road, which was the setting for the 1950's film "The Quiet Man"
