Spiddal, is a small
coastal village located just 12 miles West of Galway City. The
village is beautifully located overlooking Galway Bay & The Aran
Islands
An Spidéal is a vibrant friendly town where the people speak both
Irish and English. Spiddal is probably best known for Colaiste
Chonnacht to which students come from all over Ireland and the world
to learn the Irish language, culture and traditions. The signposts
are all in the Irish language and you will hear it spoken in the
shops, pubs and restaurants. Most people will be more than happy to
teach you a couple of words if you ask.
The Spiddal Craft Centre is where you can see crafts being made
which gives a unique opportunity to buy local handmade gifts
directly from the skilled artisans themselves. The centre consists
of a range of workshops, including candle making, leather work,
pottery, screen-printing and siopa Gaeilge, weaving, celtic
jewellery, bodhran making, wood-turning and a Restaurant.
Spiddal has two beaches on Galway Bay; one is by the roadside east
of the village, the other is sheltered behind the pier and is
reached by means of a narrow road west of the village. The rocks
behind the pier, and the pier itself, provide some shore angling
when the mackerel shoals are in. Galway has six Blue Flag Beaches.
Tra na mBan in Spiddal is one of those, a rural beach which is
easily accessible. Located close to Shannagarraun wood which is a
Special Area of Conservation. The Oaks and Hazel and Holly and Birch
have an under storey rich in ferns, mosses and lichens.
