Williamstown is a
scenic village located in the north east of County Galway, situated
between the busy shopping towns of Tuam, Roscommon and Claremorris.
The village is situated half way between Dunmore and Ballymoe and is
40 miles from Galway City. Ireland West Airport at Knock is located
nearby.
Few other places will boast of such a strange beginning because it
was founded in the last century by William McDermott, a local
landlord, just to spite a rival who tried to establish another town
close by. Today the village enjoys a reputation for excellence,
including music, drama, GAA Sport, festivals and heritage. Visitors
to Williamstown are warmly welcomed with 'West-of-Ireland'
hospitality. There are lots of fascinating places of interest
including the holy wells at Templetogher and Beaugh, the mill and
granary at Templetogher, many ringforts throughout Williamstown and
the ancient roadways at Castletogher. Recreation activities include
river and lake fishing, scenic walking, a modern playground for
children and numerous sporting facilities. Williamstown prides
itself with its high ranking in the Tidy Towns Competition each
year. |
