Annascaul is located
on the Dingle Peninsula on the main Tralee – Dingle road (15 km from
Dingle, 30km from Tralee). The village lies in the southern
foothills of the Slieve Mish mountains. This range forms the
backbone of the Dingle Peninsula and rises to peaks of over 2000ft
Annascaul was the birthplace of the Antarctic explorer Tom Crean,
who was part of Robert Scott's ill-fated attempts to reach the South
Pole. He once owned the The South Pole Inn which is located in the
village. This famous pub is featured in a Guinness advertisement
depicting Thomas Crean reminiscing about a pint of the black stuff.
Anascaul is also the birthplace of Jerome Connor, the renowned
sculptor.
Annascaul is a walker's paradise. Hill and dale, sea, river, lake
make an ever-changing pattern, with wild flowers blooming
everywhere. The
mountain walks in the area are spectacular, particularly over the
Beenoskee mountain. |
