Ardfert is an
attractive and historic village located just 8km north of Tralee in
County Kerry.
The village is enriched with some of the most attractive historical
sites in the country. The village is most widely recognised through
its connections with Saint Brendan the Navigator. It was St. Brendan
who founded a monastic settlement in Ardfert at the beginning of the
6th century.
Ardfert Cathedral was built on the site of St. Brendan's Oratory.
The cathedral is located in an idyllic spot with views of the
Atlantic to the west. This limestone ecclesiastical site has
undergone major restoration work in recent times as the building has
many fine architectural features. These features include a singular
arcade of nine windows known as the "Nine Choirs of Angels" as well
as Romanesque doorways, Ogham stone features and a number of early
Christian and Medieval grave slabs.
The substantial remains of Ardfert Friary can be found to the east
of the village. This was a Franciscian Friary founded by the first
Lord of Kerry, Thomas Fitzmaurice in 1253. The friary consisted of a
cloister, a square tower and a dormitory. A beautifully stone
crafted fountain is located in the centre of Ardfert. Close by is
the Glandore Gate. This was the main entrance to the Great House of
the Crosbie family. The building is now privately owned.
Ardfert Golf Club is an undulating 9 hole parkland course with
scenic views of the surrounding countryside. It is built on a
limestone and sandy base allowing play to continue throughout the
year without interruption.
