Ballybunion is a
coastal village in northwestern County Kerry 8 km from the town of
Listowel. Ballybunion faces out west to the Atlantic Ocean and
across the Shannon estuary to the shores of County Clare. The
village is 50km from the famous Killarney National Park.
Ballybunion is one of the top seaside resorts in the country.
Endowed with a beautiful setting, the town is famous for the
Ballybunion Golf Links - 2 superb championship links courses
overlooking the magnificent beach and dramatic cliff scenery of the
area. The Ballybunion golf course is now ranked in the top ten golf
courses in the world. The original golf course is over 100 years old
and was designed by Robert Trent Jones. The Old course at 6,593
yards par 71 is much sought after by the visiting golfer. The newer
Cashen course is a par 72- 6,306 yards and is growing steadily in
popularity. During the weeks prior to the British Open Golf
Championship, many of the top American golfers, such as Tiger Woods
and Tom Watson, come to play the links course in preparation for the
Open.
Ballybunion can boast one of the finest beaches in the country.
Fronting the town, the blue flag beach continues for two miles
south. The beach is popular among swimmers due its warm Atlantic
waters. There is also a modern health and leisure centre featuring a
20m X 10m pool, as well as traditional seaweed baths fuelled with
seawater and local kelp. Boats for angling and pleasure trips are
available.
Ballybunion is steeped in a long history stretching back to the 14th
century when the castle which forms the focal point of the village
was erected by the Geraldines. A visit to the Heritage Centre and
Museum will bring visitor through the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze
and Iron ages in the area. The centre also features early Christian
settlements in Ballybunion and hosts displays on the world famous
Lartigue Monorail and the Marconi Radio Station.
Ballybunion hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the
year including the famous Ballybunion International Bachelor
Festival, an annual River Raft Run and a Husband and Wife Golf
Competition, a two-day event over the Old and Cashen Courses. There
is also a Guided Walking Weekend of beach, cliff and hill walking.
The Tinteán Theatre in Ballybunion is a purpose built performance
venue with contemporary Traditional Irish Dance, Irish Music and
literature as its core and tourism as its primary audience market
Places of interest withing an easy drive of Ballybuinon include
Dingle, Tarbert House, The Garden of Europe, Kerry County Museum,
Ballyheigue Maritime Centre, Fenit Seaworld, Crag Cave and
Blennerville Windmill. |
