Brandon is a small
village located on the northern tip of the Dingle Peninsula in
County Kerry. Set beneath the imposing Mount Brandon, this remote
village , with its gorgeous views over Brandon Point and Brandon
Head, acts as a great base for walkers and naturalists. The area,
rich in coastal flora and fauna, has been awarded an EU
environmental quality award for its contribution to sustainable
living.
Mount Brandon is the second highest mountain in Ireland, rising to
2775Ft and is considered by many walkers to be one of the finest
mountain in the country. The mountain is made up of a fantastic
arrangement of corrie lakes and spectacular cliff faces. The remains
of St. Brendan's oratory, cell and well are located on the summit of
Mount Brandon. A yearly pilgrimage occurs to this point during the
Lughnasa Festival held in the Cloghane and Brandon region. The views
from the summit are truly spectacular.
In Brandon-Cloghane area, there is a choice between shore angling at
Cappa and Fermoyle strands or casting for trout and salmon in the
Owenmore River Valley below the Conor Pass. The tidal estuary of
Cloghane Creek is a favourite haunt of curlews, oystercatchers,
herons and many other waders. Cormorants, razorbills and guillemots
find it a rich fishing ground. Fulmars nest at Brandon Point, off
which majestic gannets wheel and plummet in their spectacular quest
for food.
From Brandon village a 20 minutes drive over the fabulous Conor Pass
will take you into Dingle, famous for it's dolphin - Fungie. Dingle
also has a host of traditional pubs and restaurants, and is the
gateway to the "West", with its beautiful views and scenic drives. |
