Located on the
southern coast of the Iveragh peninsula and set against the backdrop
of spectacular scenery, and stunning views the village of Castlecove
has much to offer the visitor. This small tourist resort with
beautiful sandy beaches nearby is on the famous Ring of Kerry Road
between Waterville and Sneem.
Castlecove is situated on the shores of Derrynane Bay which gives
it's name to the surrounding area. The bay is a renowned centre for
all types of Watersports including swimming, diving, kayaking,
canoeing, surfing, water-skiing, wakeboarding and sailing. Other
popular activities available in the area include horse-riding, sea
angling and golfing. With activities for all ages, Castlecove is a
perfect family holiday destination.
The countryside immediately surrounding Castlecove is ideally suited
for all types of walking, ranging from gentle strolls along lovely
sandy beaches to more serious hikes over craggy hills. The famous
'Kerry Way' walk takes you along the ridge of hills, all the way
from Waterville to Kenmare and is well sign posted, but still
wonderfully unspoiled.
The village boasts one of the best preserved stone ring forts in the
country. Staigue Fort dates from the Iron age and is a designated
national monument . It is almost circular, 27 metres in diameter.
The walls are almost 4 metres thick at the base and 2 metres thick
at the top. The north side is still in good condition with some of
the old coping stones still in position. The wall is 5.5 metres high
on the north and west sides. It has a square-headed doorway and
inside are two small chambers. The stairways run inside the wall
almost to the full height of the wall, and these stairs lead to
narrow platforms on which the fort’s defenders stood. |
