Castlegregory, named
after a castle built by Gregory Hoare in the 16th century, is
situated on the northern side of the Dingle Peninsula in County
Kerry. The village is located at the foot of a narrow neck of land
which divides Brandon Bay from Tralee Bay. Located to the north of
the village lies the Maharees Peninsula made famous for its sandy
beaches and clean water. Off the Peninsula lies a group of seven
Islands simply know as "The Maharee Islands".
The Castlegregory area abounds in beaches! The longest beach in
Ireland stretches from the Maharees westwards through Castlegregory
to Cloghane village – 19km in length. There is a Blue Flag beach in
the Maharees. All of the beaches are sandy, and many are suitable
for surfing and other watersports. The sea water is clean throughout
the entire area.
For golfing enthusiasts, Castlegregory Golf and Fishing Club is
located in Stradbally, just over 3km from Castlegregory village.
This is a superb links golf course situated between the scenic Lough
Gill and Brandon Bay. The magical colours of Mount Brandon act as a
magnificent backdrop to this 5876 yard par 68 nine-hole course. The
tranquil setting, combined with the excellent use of natural
features ensure that Castlegregory provides golfers with an
enjoyable but testing challenge.
In the Maharees area, there is pony trekking along the beaches, as
well as scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, canoeing and
waterskiing. Equipment and instruction are available locally. Indeed
the area has become renowned for surfing with the world
championships being held there in 2000. Nearby Lough Gill is an
important breeding ground and home to the rare Natterjack Toad as
well as the migratory Bewick, Mute and Whooper swans.
South of Castlegregory is one of the most beautiful places on the
Peninsula - Glentassig. With its forested area and lakes it provides
ideal walking and fishing terrain. Another renowned walk in the area
is the highest mountain pass in Ireland - the Connor pass which
divides Mount Brandon and the Stradbally mountain, from which one
can view some spectacular scenery.
During the summer months, Castlegregory really comes alive. A wide
variety of entertainment is available, from currach racing to a
week-long carnival in July. |
