The picturesque
village of Castlemaine is located between Killorglin and Tralee in
County Kerry. It is situated on the banks of the beautiful Maine
River. The village lies inland from the head of Castlemaine Harbour
and is pleasantly situated against the background of the Slieve Mish
mountains to the north-west. The silting up of the River Maine has
robbed the town of its sea-borne trade, which at one time was
considerable. Castlemaine takes its name from a castle built on the
bridge over the River Maine by Mac Carthy More and the Earl of
Desmond as a defence to the River Maine crossing.
Castlemaine village is the ideal gateway to both the Dingle
Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry. The village is 25 minutes from
Killarney, 15 minutes from Tralee, 40 minutes from Dingle, 10
minutes from Kilorgan, 20 minutes from Inch Beach and 15 minutes
from Kerry Airport.
There are more than 20 golf courses in Kerry to choose from,
including the world famous championship courses of Ballybunion,
Killarney, Tralee and Waterville. Killorglin - 10km from Castlemain
- boasts its own scenic 18-hole course and Dooks one of the oldest
links courses in Ireland, established in 1889, with spectacular
views over Dingle Bay is just 12km away
