The colourful village
of Cloghane is located on the northern tip of the Dingle Peninsula
close to the village of Brandon. The village overlooks the Owenmore
estuary and faces out onto Brandon Bay.
The area surrounding Cloghane has numerous rivers, streams, lakes
and waterfalls, and the landscape varies from mountain pass to peak
to bog-covered valley floor. The area has an abundance of flora,
with arctic alpines growing near the peaks of Mount Brandon, and
many seaside flowers growing on the sandy shores of the bay. The
tidal estuary of Cloghane Creek is a favourite haunt of curlews,
oystercatchers, herons and many other waders. The Cloghane/Brandon
area has received a Beatha Environmental Quality Award which proves
that this area has an excellent environment that is being managed in
a sustainable way.
The Cloghane / Brandon area also boasts the longest beach in
Ireland, which starts in Cloghane and runs unbroken through Fermoyle,
Castlegregory, and down the Maharees Peninsula. There is also the
distinctive red sand of the secluded Ballyquin beach, and the
stunning Cappagh beach with its own swimming pool at low tide. All
of the beaches in the area are sandy, and many are suitable for
surfing and other watersports.
There are several lively pubs in the Cloghan area offering live
traditional music. This is a Gaeltacht region - an area rich in
Irish language, music and dance. The yearly Irish Festival of
Lughnasa is organised between Cloghane and Brandon villages. This
festival brings visitors from the around the world to experience the
old Irish tradition of celebrating the Lughnasa.
Cloghane is a wonderful place to visit for hill walkers. It is
located at the base of Mount Brandon and therefore is a good
starting point for Mount Brandon hikes. There are numerous other
picturesque walks and cycle routes in the area.
Dingle is 20 minutes across the Conor Pass, where you can find great
shopping, restaurants and the Slea Head drive. Dingle town has a
wide variety of restaurants to choose from. |
