Cromane is a small
seaside village, situated between Killorglin and Glenbeigh. It is
8km west of Killorglin and 6km north east of Glenbeigh. The village
has a pebble beach and fine views of Dingle Bay and the Dingle
peninsula.
Cromane is in the enviable location between two of the most
spectacular peninsulas in Ireland. Dingle Peninsula is to the North,
just a short distance across the water from Cromane. The Iveragh
Peninsula extends Westwards from Cromane and is the location of the
McGillycuddy Reeks range of mountains in which are located the
highest mountains in Ireland, Carrantouhil and Bín Ciarra.
The people of Cromane have traditionally depended on fishing and
small farming for its existence. While salmon and trout have been
fished for generations from Cromane, the principal harvest of the
area in modern times has been mussels from what is the largest
natural bed in Ireland, that of Castlemaine Harbour. The Cromane
hinderland is home to lakes and boglands and is a varied landscape
with a wealth of interesting flora and fauna.
Cromane is a very short drive from the famous links golf course at
Dooks. Golf has been played in Dooks since 1889, when it was
introduced to local aristocracy. It is one of the oldest Links
course in Ireland. The course is set on a stretch of sand dune at
the head of Dingle Bay. For the golfer seeking a beautiful and
tranquil environment to enjoy good golf, Dooks presents a convincing
case. |
