Derrynane is a small
village in County Kerry located just off main road between
Caherdaniel and Waterville on the southern side of the Iveragh
peninsula. The village is situated on the shores of Derrynane Bay.
Derrynane is one of the most beautiful places in Ireland. The small
harbour of Derrynane was once the haunt of smugglers and pirates but
now offers modern adventurers the opportunity to enjoy some of the
most beautiful scenery and walks imaginable.
Derrynane Beach is a really wonderful stretch of white sandy shore.
This Blue Flag Beach is renowned for its waves - perfect if you
fancy doing a spot of surfing.
Derrynane House was the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell, the
Irish statesman who played an important role in gaining Catholic
Emancipation in 1829. Today some 120 hectares of the lands of
Derrynane, together with Derrynane House, make up Derrynane National
Historic Park. Staigue Fort, one of Ireland's finest examples of an
ancient stone ringfort is located just over 4km from Derrynane
The Derrynane area caters for all ages and tastes. Activities
include, kayaking, canoeing, horse-riding, diving or simply
strolling along quiet roads covered in wild flowers. Derrynane
offers the bass fisherman a varied and superb bass fishing venue.
There are sightseeing trips to the Skellig Islands from Derrynane
Harbour daily during the Summer season. |
