Dunquin is a quaint
village situated at the Western tip of the Dingle peninsula,
overlooking the Blasket Islands. Clogher Head lies to the north and
Dunmore Head to the south. Dunmore Head is the most westerly point
on the mainland. Dunquin is overlooked by Mount Eagle (1,659ft)
which rises to the north of Slea Head.
If the West Kerry Gaeltacht has a spiritual capital, then Dunquin is
it. The little village has for decades been a mecca to students of
the Irish language and has become in recent times faithful custodian
of the Blasket heritage. The Blasket Centre in Dunquin celebrates
the literary, cultural, social and historic heritage of the Great
Blasket, the only one of the seven Blasket Islands to have been
occupied. The islanders left for the final time in 1953 - many of
them going to Springfield, Massachusetts. Boat trips to the Blaskets
are available from Dunquin pier.
In 1588, when the Spanish Armada returned via Ireland many of the
ships sought shelter in the Blasket Sound — the area between Dunquin
and the Islands — and some were wrecked there. A memorial stands on
the cliffs overlooking the site.
Some of the scenes from the famous 1970's film Ryan's Daughter were
shot around Dunquin. Legendary director David Lean once described
Dunquin as ‘the edge of the world’. |
