The tiny village of
Glencar is located above Caragh Lake along the Ring of Kerry 16km
south west of Killorglin.
The breathtaking valley of Glencar offers exceptional views of the
MacGillycuddy Reeks and contains the passes of Ballaghbeama and
Ballagh Oisin. High above Caragh Lake is the naturally beautiful
district of Glencar. Glencar is situated in the heart of the
highlands of Kerry.
The rugged beauty of this area is greatly enhanced by the delightful
Lickeen Forest. The upper Caragh River flowing through Glencar has
always attracted keen anglers, and is also a delight for the hill
walker, mountain climber and nature lover. The Caragh River is one
of Irelands premier salmon rivers. The area is also famous for its
rough shooting of woodcock, snipe, pheasant, duck and hare between
November and January
The ruins of an iron smelting works, developed by Petty under the
Cromwellian conquest, can be seen today in the foothills of Glencar. |
