The quaint seaside
village of Kells is ideally situated between Cahersiveen and
Glenbeigh, a mile from the Ring of Kerry on the northern shores of
the Iveragh Peninsula.
Kells is an old style fishing village and still continues in the
fishing tradition to this day. The peaceful atmosphere and clear
waters of the sheltered blue flag beach at Kells Bay has made it a
family favourite for years during the summer months. It's ideal for
children, with rock pools, streams and a river to keep them happy
for hours on end. They can paddle and swim on the beach with fine
sand underfoot, and when the tide comes in they can jump and dive
off the pier.
A major attraction in the area is the wondeful Kells Bay Gardens and
Tearooms. Work first began on Kells Gardens in 1847 with new
additions still being added to this day. It is a plant enthusiasts
paradise showing an array of mature plants such as Yuccas, Asioniums,
Aeoniums, Agaves, Puya to name but a few.
The overall area of Kells is where the Ring of Kerry threads its way
through the mountains of Knocknadobar and Been Hill. The road has
many pull-in points where drivers get out to admire the views across
the sea to the Dingle Peninsula. Another attraction in the area is
the engineering feat of Gleensk Viaduct. The train line was operated
by the Great Southern and Western Railway Company until 1960. |
