The elegant riverside
town of Kenmare was founded in 1670 by Sir William Petty and is
today a designated heritage town. Kenmare is an important example of
a planned town. It is laid out in an X-plan and has a fine, wide
main street and square.
Nowadays Kenmare is better known as a poular tourist town with many
fine restaurants, hotels, colourful pubs and interesting craft and
boutique shops. Nevertheless it retains its links to a more ancient
past. Not far from Market Street is the Bronze Age Druid's Circle,
consisting of 15 standing stones. Whether it was used as a burial
place or for sun worship, is no longer know but its importance to
the early inhabitants of Kenmare is without question.
You can trace the history of the town at the Kenmare Heritage Centre
located in the renovated Courthouse. You can also learn about its
tradition of lace making at the Lace Museum. Kenmare is a popular
base for watersports and horse riding and has a fine selection of
galleries and craft outlets. In nearby Bonane a newly-opened
Heritage Park features a series of ancient monuments while a
traditional cottage and farm centre looks at life before the advent
of electricity. Kilgarvan Motor Museum, just outside Kenmare, has a
rare collection of vintage and classic cars on display, some of
which are still in use.
Kenmare is located on the famous Ring of Kerry, a circuit around the
coast of the beautiful Iveragh peninsula. The Ring offers both
spectacular scenery and interesting places to visit including
Staigue Fort, Derrynane House, Valentia Island and numerous quaint
villages. To the north of Kenmare is the Killarney National Park,
10,000 hectares of woodland and magical mountains, with spectacular
views of the lakes of Killarney. The unspoiled Ring of Beara lies to
the south of Kenmare. Its rugged beauty is breathtaking and will
keep you enthralled for many hours.
Kenmare has two beautiful golf courses. The Kenmare Golf Club is
situated beside the prestigious Park Hotel. This golf course has 18
holes. There are wonderful views to be enjoyed as you play which
make the experience very special. Kenmare's second golf course is
the stunning Ring of Kerry Golf and Country Club. It is situated
only 6km from Kenmare town and enjoys panoramic view of the Kenmare
Bay and the Caha Mountains. |
